The team aims to study correlations between atoms in an interacting n-body system in an optical network. They want to study the quantum and thermal nature of the correlations in such a system and the role of these correlations in phase transitions.
The team uses metastable helium atoms in these experiments. This atomic species allows an atom-by-atom detection. With these detectors, it is possible to reconstruct distributions of the three-dimensional pulses, and their multiple-particle correlations.
